I'm walking to keep
Africa Alive!

All of you know the place that Africa holds in my heart. Having travelled throughout the continent I can attest to not only the beauty and majesty of the landscape but the generosity, love, intelligence and ingenuity of her people. Whether at the diamond mines in Jo’burg, the pyramids in Egypt, the Great Wall of Zimbabwe or strolling along the Casbah, one thing was plainly obvious, what makes Africa (birthplace of civilization and home to the greatest philosophical, scientific, and artistic minds in the history of humankind) great is her most precious natural resource: the hearts, minds, and spirits of her people.
Imagine my distress when I learned that for our brothers and sisters in Ghana these brilliant minds, committed hearts, and resilient spirits were being silenced before their time. With an average life expectancy of 58 years, too many are leaving us before they can make their full contribution to the world. Too many are departing before they can pass on their wealth of knowledge and wisdom to the next generation. Too many are dying too soon!
Never one to sit on the sidelines as a spectator I knew I needed to do my part to help transform this sad statistic. I knew I needed to be the change I wanted to see. That is why I have agreed to participate in the Second Annual Accra International Marathon. [Ok - in the interest of full disclosure – I am participating in its half-marathon walk.] The funds raised from this venture go to support the work of The Longevity Project, which seeks to increase the life expectancy and quality of life for Ghanaians through education and advocacy for better nutrition, improved health care, and safe drinking water and air quality.
I am committed to this project but I can’t do it alone. I need each
of you to give me a hand. Maybe you can’t give up a thriving career
as my law school classmate Anna Bannerman-Richter did to start The Longevity
Project. Perhaps you don’t have the time or the physical ability to
participate in a marathon. But you do have the ability to support the work
of this organization by sponsoring me. I am looking to raise $10,000 so every
dollar counts. All US donations are fully tax-deductible and when I reach
$5,000 I will earn free airfare to Accra. So…can
I count on U? Will
you join
with me as a sponsor?
I leave you with the words of our ancient African wisdom: I am because we are and we are because I am. Remember together we can help keep Africa Alive! Thank you.
Nyame Nhyira Wo (God bless you)!
