Dear Friends:

Please join or sponsor me to participate in the Accra International Marathon in September. Actually, I’m not sure if I was in my right mind when I agreed to do this. I am fairly sure this will be about as much fun as going to the dentist. I am pretty sure that no matter how much I train for it, running will never replace racquetball as my sport of choice. But, I am very sure that by this simple act of you pledging me to support the life-saving work of The Longevity Project, we will save lives.

You and I know that “an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure.” Many of us understand the simple relationship between good diet, regular exercise and good health. Even if it’s difficult for us to follow this advice all the time, we have ready access to both the information and the opportunities to lead a healthy lifestyle.

But, many of our brothers and sisters in Ghana and Africa do not have these opportunities. A major reason I am motivated to support this effort is that it emphasizes supporting Africans to take responsibility for their own health by increasing public awareness of health risks and supporting folks to take better care of themselves. It reminds me of that saying about the value of teaching a man to fish rather than giving him fish.

In the interest of full disclosure, I have to say that I may not be able to make it back to Africa to run this year. But, with your support, I will either participate in a comparable madness here in California (that should be pretty easy to find) or do a future edition of the AIM, but the funds are needed now. My goal is to raise $5,000 over the next several weeks. Many thanks for your support. Or, as we say in my hometown, “Me daasi pii!
